Achieve Your Best Autumn Skin!
The change of seasons, particularly from Summer to Autumn, can have a more significant impact on the health of your skin than you think. Your skin is the first and most important barrier between your body and the outside world and it reacts to different environments in different ways.
The Summer humidity causes your skin to naturally produce more oils, commonly resulting in a better nourished and glowing complexion. The shift to autumn can be a shock to the skin’s system.
As temperatures and humidity levels drop, the skin is one of the first organs to feel the effects as it becomes dryer, more fragile, irritated, flakier, and itchier. Autumn and winter are also when recurring skin conditions, like eczema, dandruff, and psoriasis rashes, can flare up.
Sally and Elspeth, our mien skin experts, recommend you get prepared early, and have shared some handy tips to help you modify your skincare and maintain a glowing complexion heading into Winter
Cleanse and exfoliate
Cleansers, exfoliants and masks play an important part in the hydrating process. They work to remove dead cell material and toxins, allowing the nutrient-rich oils, serums and spritzes to work to rebuild the skin’s structures and functions.
We love DMK’s At - Home Enzyme Masque.
Moisturise
With the arrival of dryer, cooler air, switching to a heavier moisturiser is best. Sally recommends investing in a good lipid for the skin, to keep that important moisture barrier intact. DMK Seba-E and Herbal Pigment Oil are ideal to use underneath your moisturiser especially in the colder months as they re-establish the skin’s acid mantle by mimicking the natural way that the skin secretes oil.
Seba E contains a fine blend of natural herbal oils like soybean, oat kernel oil, wheat germ oil and linseed, plus many more punchy actives that replicate your skin’s natural lipid barrier. Mixed with Herb & Mineral Mist, the blend of lipids and water are a guaranteed way to rehydrate and waterproof the skin. Another versatile oil that helps to brighten, smooth and strengthen the skin, whilst protecting against dehydration is Herbal Pigment Oil. It also smooths and exfoliates making it perfect for dark circles around the eyes, dark patches on the knees and elbows, raised scars, cuticles and dry, cracked lips; a common symptom of the cooler months.
Apply SPF
Dont let the shorter days and cooler temperature fool you! Always remember to apply sunscreen before heading out! Protect your skin from damaging UVA and UVB rays that contribute to premature aging and pigmentation. Sally and Elspeth love DMK’s light, non greasy SPF. Available in both 15 and 50+ strengths, they work effectivley over your skincare and under your make-up:)
Stay Hydrated
By drinking plenty of water - this helps to transport toxins and waste away from your cells helping them to perform their natural funtion.
Some things to avoid
Avoid hot showers, as they can dry out your skin.
Although exfoliating is important, don’t overdo it, as that can cause irritation and impare your skins barrier - once a week is plenty.
Avoid long exposure to indoor heating as it can dehydrate your skin.
Don’t lick your lips, as it can make them more chapped. Instead carry around the Aveda Lip Saver lip balm for added moisture and spf for protection from UV rays.
Difference between dry skin and dehydrated skin?
Dry skin lacks oil, while dehydrated skin lacks water. Dry skin is a skin type, however dehydrated skin is a temporary condition that can affect any skin type.
