Q & A Time with Dejan

We recently sat down with our star top stylist, Dejan, to ask him some questions about his own experiences working in the hair industry! Read on to learn a bit more about Dejan and discover hair trends to look out for as well as tips on how he achieves the perfect voluminous blow-dry that we all know and love!

How long have you been working in the hair industry?

More than 20 years now! I started as an apprentice for 3 years and after that it was work, work, work!

What do you do for fun when you’re not working?

In my free time, I LOVE to do drag! I do transformations on myself and others. Lots of glamorous makeup, hair up-do’s, wigs and designing dresses.

You’re regarded as one of the fastest and most creative haircutters at Mien by your peers. Why is it that you can produce such amazing results so quickly?

Well firstly, thanks guys! I think the most important thing is focus. I think when you have the experience and knowledge the speed and quality develops.

If you could survive on one hair product, what would it be?

Ooh that’s one tough question! I can’t choose one, it depends on so many factors such as the condition of the hair and length. But if I HAD to pick… it would be dry shampoo, because I just love how you can see immediate results from the product to create volume!

What skill are you best known for at Mien?

It’s gotta be the blow dry.

What’s the most commonly requested hairstyle for special occasions?

The client usually asks for something more effortless and less tidy for special occasions such as formals and weddings. Lots of loose ends, loose curls, nothing too straight and sleek. It’s common for them to want to create a lot of movement, almost something more natural and effortless.

What hair trends are you most excited to see this Spring/Summer?

This year i’ve been really excited by wolf cuts and hope to see my clients asking for them this Spring/Summer! I love how wolf cuts can be glam but also be so effortless, messy and beachy!

What are some differences you’ve noticed in hair trends in Australia compared to back home?

I think the main thing i’ve noticed that here in Australia are more casual and laid back when it comes to hair styling. Compared to Europe and Serbia, where there’s a lot more emphasis on how you present yourself in public. I was so surprised when i first came here and I would do a haircut on a client and they weren’t as interested in the blow-dry aspect - it’s so important to style the hair so you can really see the end product!

What’s your favourite thing about working at Mien?

That wold definitely be the freedom we have here. The creative freedom to do various services such as colour, cuts, makeup and up-do’s is what I enjoy most!

What’s your favourite make-up look to do?

Definitely a cut-crease eyeshadow, it can just completely transform your eye shape!

What do you think is the most important step when it comes to makeup application?

Skin care! If you don’t have a good skincare the make up just won’t look good after application. I always recommending preparing your skin before applying - it’s just the most important step of all!

You’re sometimes called upon to deal with long hair blow drys and you use a small round brush. What do you feel is so great about that approach? Why is it better and how do you get such amazing results?

By using the small brush on long hair you create a lot of volume, body and most importantly texture. It’s similar to using a small curling wand on your hair to create a tighter curl, when you brush out waves using a small brush you are gonna create a lot more movement that’s going to last longer.
