From Hair Salon to Salon Spa - why the name change?
A new range of descriptions exist in our modern hair and beauty world. Beauty Spa, Beauty Retreat, Beauty Salon, Hair Retreat, Hair Spa & of course Day Spa. Terms that are becoming common in our ever uniting industries. The image of fluffy slippers and lace curtains is gone while modern expressions have evolved to let consumers know what is available today.
Spa is drawn from either Salus Per Aquum or Siena par Aqua - ancient phrases with a similar meaning- Healing Through Water. To further differentiate a Retreat may offer "spa style services", while a salon may be described a spa when providing hydrotherapy services. The word salon is used when all the standard hair and beauty services are also offered. Our mission at mien has always been to develop a complete salon that satisfies as many needs and wants of our hairdressing clients while providing the highest possible level of service. Our Day spa (2nd floor) and future wellness/ Yoga centre (on the 3rd floor) is a natural evolution for mien salon spa.
Spa is a word whose image is built into a place of renewal. Together with AVEDA we at mien salon spa are committed to providing services which renew your image with professional hair direction, your skin tone and vitality with Aurvedic aromatherapy services and through the trans-formative power of massage your own inner peace and energy.
Refresh your mind and revive your scalp with an aromatherapy head massage at the basin. Enjoy coffee in the courtyard, relax and catch up on the latest magazines by the bar. Music is fresh and chosen for listening pleasure. Magazines are current and reflect our direction and taste. Original images are displayed on the walls of the salon; mien's photography is either used in industry competitions, as contracted for advertising purposes or solely for our own pleasure to stimulate and maintain a constant direction - it is our medium for individual style.
The layout of the salon is open and inviting and comprises both cutting and colour rooms. Having a predominantly New York warehouse feel there are also many eclectic elements within the interior design. Owners Claudia and Simon have created more an evolution of a salon than a stagnant space; there is always something different to take note of each time you come to get your hair done. Rustic style benches have been created from a massive elm branch amputated by the SEC for maintenance purposes. Always friendly and relaxed you'll be welcome and never be in the way of a bustling hairdresser at 'spacious' mien.
The Day Spa:Established in July 2005 the day spa has been an awesome addition to the salon. A great way to unwind with masses of services and packages to choose from. Our Day Spa offers everything from XXX Bikini waxing to Shiatsu massage. Across 7 luxurious rooms the spa also contains a double spa room which is great for couples wanting pampering in company. The Buildings history:The following text is taken from a "walkers website" ( a site dedicated to people who like to walk around the city looking at old buildings): "Built in 1889 during the Edwardian period in the Queen Anne style. 370 Queens Parade Fitzroy North is of architectural significance as one of the best examples of English Queen Anne Revival style commercial architecture in Melbourne. It is the only metropolitan example of Queen Anne style bank buildings in Victoria The building was originally built to house one of Melbourne's first banks (originally "The First Melbourne" Bank)." A bank ever since then up until mien was established in 1999.
